Volunteers are critical to Throwaway Ponies. We have no paid staff. But, it is important to have the right volunteers. All volunteers go through training. Adults are asked to submit permission for a criminal background check and personal references. Mature children age 11 and above may be considered for volunteer work. Parents must sign a release of liability and complete a volunteer application for themselves if they are going to be around the children here for therapy. Both parents must sign the release of liability for the child
What Do Volunteers Do:
Horses: need grooming and love and attention. Some people just want to brush and pet the horses. Horses need attention and if you can spend time with them, they would love to spend time with you.
Cleaning: tack and stalls need attention. So do the arenas and pastures. We don't routinely put our horses in stalls (how would you like to spend most of your time in your bedroom?), so there's not much stall cleaning to do. But the barn and tack need attention. And, manure needs to be removed from paddocks, pastures and the yard.
Side walkers: working with our younger children while they are riding or around the horses. Sessions are March, April, May and September, October, November.
Maintenance: painting, fixing, building - all a part of what we do. These are often good Eagle Scout projects too.
PR: Can you write newspaper articles? Put a bumper sticker on your car?
Fund Raising: We have an annual golf tournament in May. That takes LOTS of work. We also need help with our annual garage sale. Helping find and write grants.
